Speech and Language - Clinical Process and Practice 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): M. Bray Speech and Language - Clinical Process and Practice 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
M. Bray
R1,311 Discovery Miles 13 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book demonstrates how students can apply what they have learned to bridge the gap between theory and therapy as they begin their professional practice. The authors argue that the only way to be ready to face the demands of professional practice and life-long learning is to acquire a thorough understanding of the process and practice of clinical work.

Fully revised, this second edition incorporates: new standards of service delivery and clinical competenciesregistration of the profession under the Health Professions Councilcollaborative working with shared client programmes and recordsclient-centred philosophy and social models of intervention

The authors emphasize the need to have a sound knowledge of what the profession is and who it encompasses; the awareness of the concepts that underpin decision-making, planning and choice of activities; and understanding of the philosophies that drive the choice of working practices.

Robert M. Bray, Laurel L. Hourani, Jason Williams, Marian E. Lane, Mary Ellen Marsden
R3,533 Discovery Miles 35 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the stresses of repeated deployments to the difficulties of re-entry into civilian life, we are just beginning to understand how protracted conflicts, such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan, are affecting service members. Issues such as risky health behaviors and chemical dependence raise productivity concerns as they do with all organizations, but they also have a profound impact on the safety and readiness of troops--and by extension, the military as a whole--in life-or-death situations. Understanding Military Workforce Productivity cuts through the myths and misconceptions about the health and resilience of today's active-duty armed forces. This first-of-its-kind volume presents up-to-date findings across service branches in core health areas including illness and injury, alcohol and drug abuse, tobacco use, obesity, and mental health. The short- and long-term implications discussed relate to the quality of the lives of service members and their families, the quality and preparedness of the military as a workforce, and prevention and intervention efforts. The book: Presents data from ten large-scale health behavior surveys sponsored by the Department of Defense. Offers background context for understanding health and behavioral health and productivity among service members. Introduces a health and behavioral health model of productivity loss in the armed forces. Compares key indicators of substance abuse, health, and mental health in military and civilian populations. Reviews approaches for improving military productivity. Identifies areas for further study. Understanding Military Workforce Productivity offers a rare close-up of health issues in the services, making it an invaluable source of information for practitioners and researchers in mental health, substance abuse, health behaviors, and military behavioral health.

Hepatitis B Virus Antigens in Tissues (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1979): M. Bray Hepatitis B Virus Antigens in Tissues (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1979)
M. Bray
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ever since the emergence of the concept of catharral jaundice by Virchow, viral hepatitis has eluded scientists as a pathogenetic enigma. A tremendous new impetus was given to hepatitis research by Baruch Blumberg's discovery of his 'Australia Antigen', now known as hepatitis B surface antigen. This led to an unheard-of outburst of research activity to elucidate the nature of the virus, its chemical and antigenic composition, its epidemiology, and pathogenetic mechanisms in the causation of liver disease. Coinciding with this period, modern medical science witnessed impressive progress in the analysis of the extraordinarily complex mechanism of immunological reactions. Immunohistochemical techniques for the detection of hepatitis B viral components are a product of this scientific progress in both areas. The application of such tech niques forms the core of this work. It represents a vast amount of work, performed during the course of several years, with meticulous application of advanced immunohisto chemical techniques, combined with histopathology and clinical-patho logical methods. This has resulted in the compilation of original results and new insights into the cellular and tissular localization of the anti genic components of the hepatitis B virus in different forms of chronic liver disease. The most outstanding results are the demonstration of the superior sensitivity of the applied immunohistochemical technique in the search for viral components in chronic hepatitis patients. and the differ ential distribution patterns of hepatitis B surface antigen in the various forms of chronic liver disease."

Education and Society in Hong Kong and Macao - Comparative Perspectives on Continuity and Change (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2005): M.... Education and Society in Hong Kong and Macao - Comparative Perspectives on Continuity and Change (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2005)
M. Bray, Ramsey Koo
R4,694 Discovery Miles 46 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hong Kong and Macao have much in common. The dominant populations in both territories are Cantonese-speaking Chinese; both are small in area; both are urban societies; both have been colonies of European powers; and both have undergone political transition to reunification with China. Yet in education, for reasons that are analysed in this book, they are very different.

The patters of similarities and differences in the two territories make a fascinating basis for comparative study.

The overarching theme of the book, on continuity and change is particularly pertinent following the transition of the two societies of the postcolonial era.

This thoroughly-revised and expanded second edition builds on the widely-acclaimed first edition. The work has been recognised as a significant contribution to the broad field of comparative education as well as to study of the specific societies which are its main focus.

Drug Use in Metropolitan America (Hardcover, New): Robert M. Bray Drug Use in Metropolitan America (Hardcover, New)
Robert M. Bray
R3,782 Discovery Miles 37 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recently, the Research Triangle Institute completed a five-year study sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse called The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Drug Study (DC*MADS). The study attempted to look at the nature and extent of drug abuse among diverse populations living in a single metropolitan area, focusing particularly on underrepresented populations such as the homeless, the institutionalized, and juvenile offenders along with populations that have been studied in more depth, such as persons living in households. The goal was to not only establish prevalence, correlates, and consequences of drug abuse, but to establish a research model for conducting other such studies. Drug Use in Metropolitan America describes, relates, and integrates findings from the DC*MADS study. More than that, though, this book places the findings in the larger context of our national drug abuse problem. Therefore, while there is some reporting of findings, there is more emphasis on examining the policy, research, and program implications that flow from the studies. This book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and policy makers in a number of areas, as well as to academics in Sociology courses dealing with drugs, deviance, social problems, and research methodology. It should also appeal to those concerned with Psychology and Medicine/Allied Health.

The Price of Literature examines the presence of theory in the nineteenth-century French novel, something Proust likened to leaving a price tag on a gift. Emerging after the French Revolution, what we now call literature was conceived as an art liberated from representational constraints. Patrick M. Bray shows how literature's freedom to represent anything at all has meant, paradoxically, that it cannot articulate a coherent theory of itself-unless this theory is a necessarily subversive literary representation, or "the novel's theoretical turn." Literary thought, or the theory produced by the text, can only function by exploring what escapes dominant representations. The Price of Literature analyzes how certain iconic texts from the nineteenth century (by Mme de Stael, Hugo, Balzac, Flaubert, and Proust) perform a theoretical turn to claim the freedom to represent anything in the world, but also literature's ability to transform the world it represents. The conclusion, "Distributions of Literature," advances a new way of thinking about literary scholarship-one based on how literature redistributes ways of writing by lending form to thought.

Crazy Horse - A Lakota Life (Paperback): Kingsley M. Bray Crazy Horse - A Lakota Life (Paperback)
Kingsley M. Bray

Crazy Horse was as much feared by tribal foes as he was honored by allies. His war record was unmatched by any of his peers, and his rout of Custer at the Little Bighorn reverberates through history. Yet so much about him is unknown or steeped in legend.Crazy Horse: A Lakota Life corrects older, idealized accounts - and draws on a greater variety of sources than other recent biographies - to expose the real Crazy Horse: not the brash Sioux warrior we have come to expect but a modest, reflective man whose courage was anchored in Lakota piety. Kingsley M. Bray has plumbed interviews of Crazy Horse's contemporaries and consulted modern Lakotas to fill in vital details of Crazy Horse's inner and public life. Bray places Crazy Horse within the rich context of the nineteenth-century Lakota world. He reassesses the war chief's achievements in numerous battles and retraces the tragic sequence of misunderstandings, betrayals, and misjudgments that led to his death. Bray also explores the private tragedies that marred Crazy Horse's childhood and the network of relationships that shaped his adult life. To this day, Crazy Horse remains a compelling symbol of resistance for modern Lakotas. Crazy Horse: A Lakota Life is a singular achievement, scholarly and authoritative, offering a complete portrait of the man and a fuller understanding of his place in American Indian and United States history.

Understanding Ranciere, Understanding Modernism (Paperback): Patrick M Bray Understanding Ranciere, Understanding Modernism (Paperback)
Patrick M Bray
R1,506 Discovery Miles 15 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contemporary philosopher Jacques Ranciere has become over the last two decades one of the most influential voices in philosophy, political theory, and literary, art historical, and film criticism. His work reexamines the divisions that have defined our understanding of modernity, such as art and politics, representation and abstraction, and literature and philosophy. Working across these divisions, he engages the historical roots of modernism at the end of the eighteenth century, uncovering forgotten texts in the archive that trouble our notions of intellectual history. The contributors to Understanding Ranciere, Understanding Modernism engage with the multiplicity of Ranciere's thought through close readings of his texts, through comparative readings with other philosophers, and through an engagement with modernist works of art and literature. The final section of the volume includes an extended glossary of the most important terms used by Ranciere, which will be a valuable resource for experts and students alike.
